Orlando sinh ngày 13/2/1977 tại Kent, Anh. Cha của diễn viên qua đời khi anh mới lên 4 nhưng đến 13 tuổi, mẹ cho Orlando biết, người bạn thân thiết của gia đình mới là bố đẻ của anh. Thành tích học tập thời niên thiếu của Orlando không mấy xuất sắc vì anh bị mắc chứng khó đọc. Tuy nhiên, anh rất yêu thơ và đã cùng chị gái Samantha giành nhiều giải thưởng khi còn ngồi trên ghế nhà trường.
9 tuổi, Orlando đã mê tít cô bạn cùng trường nên phải chạy thi bở hơi tai trong công viên để trở thành bạn trai của nàng. Còn mối tình 2 năm của anh và Kate Bosworth cũng có nhiều điều lãng mạn. Trong đó, có lần anh đã vượt Đại Tây Dương giữa các cảnh quay để có một ngày cạnh người yêu. Khi đã có ý trung nhân, các fan nữ vẫn là niềm cổ vũ lớn nhất sau những mệt mỏi tại phim trường. Anh nói: "Không gì tuyệt vời hơn khi thành thần tượng của phái đẹp. Đây chính là động lực thôi thúc tôi đến với điện ảnh".
Năm 16 tuổi, chàng trai đến London để thực hiện ước mơ thành thần tượng của các cô gái. Anh gia nhập Nhà hát Tuổi trẻ Quốc gia và được đào tạo diễn kịch. Từ đây, Orlando liên tục xuất hiện trên các show truyền hình và ghi được dấu ấn sau thành công của phim Wilde năm 1997.
Với gương mặt điển trai, ngôi sao hấp dẫn hơn khi tham gia các môn thể thao mạo hiểm như nhảy dù và lướt sóng. Anh cũng đạt kỷ lục trong làng điện ảnh với số thương tích trên người. Ngoài 3 lần rạn xương sọ, diễn viên đã gãy xương sườn, cả hai chân, tay. Nguy hiểm nhất là tai nạn xảy ra khi Orlando bị rơi từ nóc của tòa nhà 3 tầng và gãy xương sống năm 1998.
Nhưng khó khăn không làm Orlando lùi bước mà càng khiến anh thêm quyết tâm trong công việc. Để nhập vai trong Chúa tể của những chiếc nhẫn, tài tử đã phải học cưỡi ngựa, bơi thuyền và bắn cung suốt mấy tháng trời. Nhờ miệt mài, kỹ năng bắn cung của ngôi sao hiện đã thành điêu luyện.
